C&IT, Cass Tech students use data to assist NBA champion Chauncey Billups Hall of Fame nomination

Sports Analytics Club Program (SACP)’s recent collaboration with Wayne State University at Cass Technical High School in Detroit was a success. Students involved in our sports data analytics research programs did an outstanding job, together with their advisers, Director Carly Cirilli and Tech Analyst Minh Ha, from Wayne State University’s Computing & Information Technology and Lead Applications, respectively.
SACP’S participants from Wayne State are efficient analysts who manage important data and information that affects the university community and guide SACP’s student teams.
Students who work for SACP handle various projects and are in-charge of crucial data gathering and statistics tracking for their school’s sports teams. Through SACP, they also learn the proper strategies in data dissemination and communication for their target audiences.
Selected Cass Tech students have worked with Cirilli and Ha in the analysis for former Detroit Piston, Chauncey Billups’ statistics over 17 NBA seasons. The data they collected for a month was used to create a presentation for the selection committee of Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame. Data gathered by students compared Billup’s statistics with current Hall of Famers and listed his awards. This project was chosen for Cass Tech by the national SACP organization.
As declared by the selection committee in December 2019, Billups would be considered for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2020.
SACP is looking forward to the next projects with Cirilli and Ha who both continue to guide Cass Tech and Martin Luther King Jr. High School in Detroit.
Cirilli remains enthusiastic despite the lack of people who are knowledgeable or passionate about business intelligence and data analytics. Today there is so much data that they need to work on and the team looks forward to more diversity and young females in the field as analytics continue to grow as a profession.
On April 4, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced the nine honorees in the Class of 2020 which included Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan, Rudy Tomjanovich, Kevin Garnett, Eddie Sutton, Tamika Catchings, Patrick Baumann, Kim Mulkey, and Barbara Stevens.
Students’ efforts for this year’s analytics are commendable. Skills that the students have applied in SACP’s projects and analytics are useful for them in the long run. Presentations, case examinations, and collaboration are necessary competencies that are beneficial to the students’ future career, whether in analytics or in any industry.
